Or so I thought.

I had yet to encounter the work of my arch-rivals and peers Gygax & Arneson (Dungeons & Dragons, 1974), Jackson & Livingstone (Games Workshop, 1975).

But that was because I was nine years old and not allowed near that stuff.

At that time, my influences were those Choose Your Own Adventure books you could get by collecting Weetabix boxes, and wandering around in a school playground playing make-believe between the painted netball court tram-lines (or Corridors of Certain Death as they quite clearly were to a group of pre-pubescent boys).

But as I narrated the imagined monsters and explosions to my friends, bowl-haired, nerdy little me yearned for more structure and jeopardy, so I started using a coin toss to determine the success of our choices. When it became clear that a 50:50 chance was a bit blunt and repetitive, I drew up a probability matrix (I definitely didn’t call it that back then) to provide more variety.

In an amusing twist, reconstructing that table from memory and getting AI to bring it back to life for this blogpost revealed that nine-year-old me was wrong about the probability of the ‘hard’ tier 2-from-3 toss (which it says is still a 50:50 chance). AI gently correcting a flaw in my 40-year-old ‘game design’ dovetails beautifully into the focus of this post.

I am not a game developer. At least, not in the traditional mainstream career sense. But, as I hope my opening paragraphs illustrated, I have always developed games. Because it is my passion.

After building a game about barbarians punching drunk zombies with Google AI Studio, my most recent passion project has been making a spaceship crew simulator.

Using Google Gemini, NotebookLM, and Anthropic’s Claude, EVE Crews is a browser-based game-within-a-game that builds out from the existing sci-fi universe of massively multiplayer fleet-fest EVE Online by zooming into the activity within a single spaceship.

EVE Online gives its players god-like command of vast spaceships to work together to wage war, harvest resources, and explore the cosmos. But the activities of the ordinary inhabitants of EVE’s structures remains abstract, dealt with only in snippets of lore in and out of the game.

The power of AI tools might finally allow me to breathe life into my long-standing desire to oversee my ship’s crew. Playing make believe again, but this time, in space – and with better* hair! (it may be greying, but it’s not a bowl!)

I learned from my previous experience developing Tavern Keeper that forward planning pays. I worked with my AI ‘colleagues’ to lay out a development strategy, a workflow protocol, and various clever little command line scripts to shortcut deployment of updates. I’ve been following good practice.

More than that, I was able to develop the EVE Crews platform as something far more sophisticated than just an EVE-inspired standalone minigame. With careful AI-assisted planning and research, I was able to scope out how to get authorised access [Oauth 2.0 Single Sign On (SSO)] to use API data that EVE Online publicly shares to give my imaginary crewmen the stimulus to react.

Ship damage sustained in EVE can translate into engineering casualties that the medical teams can respond to. Events triggered by cargo carried in EVE can lead to escaped cattle roaming the lower decks. Officers can be hired and fired, mutinies can be put down, varied affiliations and competency levels among crews can be monitored and managed. And if it all still goes wrong, cadavers can be sold on the black market.

More technical barriers came tumbling down: To save my progress, I was also able to set up a hosted database to allow for persistent game saves (Supabase), and leverage Cloudflare services to provide security and Discord integration for my new eve-crews.com domain.

I’m aware that those last few paragraphs contain a lot of technical jargon (and possibly some warped ideas of fun). A few weeks ago, I wouldn’t have understood most of those terms. Which is the bigger point I’m circling around here.

While my inner nine-year-old is in the cockpit flying the spaceship into unknown peril, adult me has been enabled to step into the role of creative director, designer, producer, playtester, researcher, and many other roles, learning as I go, while outsourcing the interstitial labour to AI. The production cycle is off the scale.

What started as an idle experiment became an obsession. In four weeks, the cycle of iterative game design, prompt engineering, deployment, and testing accelerated as new ideas were planned and delivered, bugs were identified and resolved, and the vision came into focus.

The dopamine hits from drawing a creative line between a forgotten bit of EVE lore and a useful game function has become weirdly addictive. EVE’s ‘biomass’ became Soylent Green-like crew sustenance for a +1 Resilience bonus per session. Having certain fluff items in your cargo hold helps to resolve events – in the absence of a ship’s cat, the Amarr slaver hound is great at getting vermin, tourists will pay for a tour of the system, and abandoned drone parts can [redacted].

I’m caught between the joy of experiencing the fruits of my labours as my frigate XO finally earns her promotion and we upgrade to a destroyer hull and can finally hire enough officers to stop the morale collapse in the Security department, and the perfectionist editor’s need to modify just one more bit of flavour text or tweak the UI layout again. And maybe add a new event when you jump through a gate. I’m not sure which experience is The Game. I love the intermingling of creative opportunity and player satisfaction.

My brain has become a dopamine-addled sponge. Along with absorbing everything I can about AI-led productivity, I’ve learned ‘ludonarrative’ is a word describing the connection between story and game mechanics, and ‘heuristic’ is AI slang for cutting corners (or more accurately, the logic behind making an informed guess with incomplete data). Starting early, finishing late. I’ve been on a self-inflicted crunch and still I want more.

In one month, one human from outside the IT industry was able to plan and deploy over 250 software updates comprising 1,600+ individual changes.

Or as Claude analysed it:

By happenstance, in the middle of drafting this post, CCP Games became Fenris Creations and announced a partnership with Google DeepMind. They named themselves after the wolf who brings about Ragnarök – and then invited the world’s leading AI research lab in to study how intelligent behaviour emerges inside a universe built on consequence and loss. EVE Crews was built on the same cyclical philosophy of life, loss, and rebirth (or biomass). I’m choosing to take that as a good sign.

Now if I can just figure out how to make this pay, maybe I won’t have to go back to healthcare…

Last week, I was waiting at a garage for my car to be fixed.

These two unrelated events just collided in a joyously productive way, leading to the start of a creative project fifteen years in the making.

In the same week NASA sent a crew of four to the moon and back, I was inspired to put an imaginary crew into my old internet spaceships, thanks to a new EVE Online podcast I stumbled across, hosted by two of my old gaming blogger compatriots.

Listening to Rixx Javix (aka Bryan Ward) and Crazy Kinux (aka Dave Perry) talking about the evergreen online internet spaceship phenomenon, EVE Online, triggered a wave of creative nostalgia in me.

ively multiplayer online (MMO) gaming, the dystopian sci-fi and grand social experiment EVE Online was the muse that began my writing ‘career’ (more of an intermittent side-quest than a career, but hey, I’ll still be picking a lane until I die). EVE was a game I played compulsively from 2003-2014ish, and I earned my blogging stripes writing (and podcasting) about my experiences, thoughts, and ideas.

The growing EVE blogging community of the 2000s owed much to the then ‘Blogfather’, Crazy Kinux (or CK), who very much unified dozens of disparate writers into a community with regular blog ‘banter’ discussions, encouraging a cross-pollenation of readership and inspiring more would-be bloggers, like myself and more notably, Rixx Javix, who took blogging to new heights with endless creative art projects and more, not to mention his incredible staying power to still be delivering content without interruption two decades later.

However, I digress; back to spaceship crews and AI.

Recently, I’ve been investing a lot of energy into embracing AI, using it to work out how to fix the washing machine, plan my next career step, and make a game about drunk dwarfs brawling with mummies.

Game design has always been a passion of mine, and often my EVE blogposts would include ideas that I wanted to see integrated into the game.

One concept I really wanted to see was evidence of life aboard these grand spaceships that players flew, fought, explored, and traded in through EVE’s galaxy of New Eden. Even the smallest ship in EVE is the size of a commercial airliner, with many of them much larger.

EVE’s deep lore contains many references to ship crews, and the ship designs indicate crew existence with windows and decks. However, the game design elegantly sidesteps any gameplay need to manage crew complexities by having players take on the role of a god-like ‘capsuleer’ with the technological power to control massive vessels with minimal staff. Any actual crew in-game remains abstract.

That didn’t stop me from exploring the idea exhaustively over many thousands of words (for more detail than you’ll ever need, see links beneath this article), perhaps in the naive hope EVE’s developers might read it and think, ‘hey, that’s a good idea – let’s do it!’.

Back then, circa 2012, I even considered the idea of making a browser-based bolt-on game that linked to the API data that EVE Online sends out to third-party apps typically used to monitor characters or in-game market prices. Sadly, as a career healthcare professional and family man, I lacked the technical nous or the time.

Then cometh the era of AI and suddenly, I can vibe-code my dreams!

Last Thursday, I came home from the garage, still listening to CK describing to Rixx his return to the universe of EVE. Leveraging my experience of developing Tavernkeeper with agentic engineering, I pointed Claude at my old blogposts, asked for a summary, and set about using that as a foundation to build a design framework for EVE Crews.

By late afternoon, I’d managed to link a rudimentary browser-based crew simulation (for one ship type) with online persistence to EVE Online’s ESI (EVE Swagger Interface) API data outputs.

My ship now had a full complement of officers and crew with an executive officer who ‘reports’ directly to the player-capsuleer as gameplay loops triggered by EVE Online activity trigger narrative events in EVE Crews.

Over the next few days, I fell deep into a development rabbit hole, using Claude and Gemini to assist in analysis, development and execution of many planned features at incredible pace. Suggestions from EVE’s online community (shoutout to @JanesSignal for the idea to use gamelogs to overcome some of the challenges around identifying combat damage) helped shape some features.

Now at Garage-Podcast Day +4 and EVE Crews is able to breathe life into most of EVE’s hundreds of ships, with lore-accurate crew numbers fighting a battle of attrition, morale and loyalty against the cold brutality of life in space.

There’s plenty more on the roadmap ahead, but further development has paused until Wednesday as I’ve burned through all my Claude usage tokens (even though I spent a little more on extra usage – but that’s a dangerous game I can’t afford to be doing regularly).

The pause has given me the opportunity to plan next steps in more detail, and write this blogpost. Also, I should probably look into how to roll this out to the community for some alpha testing or somesuch.

There’s only so much bug hunting I can do alone.

After resigning from my healthcare management post in October, it was fully my intention after a short break to then step back into the healthcare fray. That endeavour began with some fevered absorption of online courses in AI and Agile development.

However…

Sometime in late November, I was on the phone stuck in a virtual queue while idly skimming through the AI news of the day, when my eye was drawn to some content about Google DeepMind’s new Gemini 3 AI’s ability to ‘vibe code’.

It’s probably relevant at this point to mention that I am a huge fan of tabletop and video games. A while ago, my kids and I had made up some alternative rules to an old boardgame called Heroquest. Our rules were of the ‘cozy’ variety and they enabled the player to run a ‘friendly’ cafe for the questing heroes and dungeon-dwelling monsters alike.

While being forced to listen to some awful hold music, I absent-mindedly dropped our homebrewed boardgame rules – which mostly consisted of a spreadsheet of tables and lists – into Google’s AI Studio and challenged Gemini 3 to ‘make this game’*.

And it did. Impressively well.

With that, my interest was piqued, a creative seed was planted, and I jumped into the rabbit-hole with both feet.

(*I’ve romanticised this somewhat – the initial prompt was a bit more complex than stated, as I had previously done some work with other AI suites to expand the idea as a standalone boardgame or a Roblox game.)

Building a Prototype

What I’ve made looks and sounds like something from the dawn of videogame development, but the rudimentary graphics and bleepy sound effects serve their purpose to showcase the ideas and gameplay loops that I’ve developed.

Tavernkeeper is an unashamed homage to games of my childhood; what if the characters from Gauntlet and Golden Axe took a breath from their dungeon-delving and met up for a cold beverage in Tapper’s bar? What happens when they rub shoulders with an off-duty goblin gang from the next dungeon? Or the zombified local farmer still sticks to old drinking habits? Is it a hygiene concern if I hire a Mummy as a cook?

It was an incredibly rewarding experience to be able to start with a simple boardgame grid and a turn-based game framework then introduce customers to test by tweaking behaviours and interactions on the fly – all with no tangible coding knowledge. Working with Google’s AI Studio code assistant, I could apply the iterative improvements as the ‘human in the loop’ by quickly playtesting the existing game and providing feedback and observations to modify and expand the game features.

What started off as a basic boardgame-friendly dungeon room ‘side quest’, gradually evolved into a very silly, complex simulation of a tavern full of fantasy tropes. Locals visit in hope of assistance with their missing cat/haunted well/unwanted houseguest, heroes gather to plan quests while dread knights move to foil them, necromancers recruit minions, vampires and assassins stalk their prey, there are brawls and bawdiness, secrets and ghosts.

The Ghost in the Machine

Watching the ‘ghost in the machine’ convert my ideas into code at lightning pace genuinely left me in awe. I would often outsource some of the bigger ideas to another AI tool to produce content – for example the myriad phrases (‘barks’) uttered by the many game characters were largely generated by Anthropic’s Claude based on a few flavour examples.

I’ve even used a live AI link (Gemini 3 Flash API) to provide ‘context-aware narrative experiences’. The Spirit Mirror is essentially an AI chatbot acting the part of a ghostly former tavernkeeper who can provide storyline hints and gameplay guidance, each shift is summarised by an AI-generated Morning Gazette article that appraises the player’s performance, and an obituary is written for the player when they inevitably get done in by an angry customer.

Coding Heresy or The Future of Game Development?

I am anxiously aware of the fact that this whole concept of a non-programmer like me ‘vibe coding’ is probably offensive to the entire software development sector; just as the clinical sector I’m more familiar with is very wary of any AI encroachment on patient care and data, and the writer in me remains repulsed by the idea of auto-generating written content (to assuage my guilt and address my hypocrisy, I am definitely planning to go through the barks and edit/replace many of them).

However, the absolute joy that AI has given me to be able to see ideas come to life in minutes has been a powerful and addictive timesink. I wish I could do this for a living.

The ability of AI tools to facilitate the realisation of ideas at pace is exciting and I’m sure can be applied to many industries.

Now I’m torn as to whether to keep exploring creative avenues or accepting my fate as a healthcare professional for life. I wonder where the videogame industry stands with AI use? Would I be able to crowdfund some proper development of this idea, with human-led art, sound, and design?

Or could I go all the way to market with a product entirely built with AI-generated content? Game designers must be using these tools now, right? Where is the line?

Decades ago, they promised us robot butlers and flying cars. We’ve settled for Alexa (often as helpful as a deaf grandmother), Roombas, and self-driving Cybertrucks. I wonder if the Jetsons and other prominent futurists of the last century will be spinning in their graves?

Whimsy and sarcasm aside, as a sci-fi fan it is beginning to feel like that future is finally arriving. Modern life is awash with technology, with touchscreens and voice control giving us unprecedented access to the collected repository of knowledge (and ignorance) that is the World Wide Web. But that can be overwhelming to navigate, full of pitfalls and rabbit holes, and quite off-putting for some.

AI feels like the final piece of the Information Age puzzle. Far from being a tech barrier, AI chatbots are the accessible interface to the internet which shortcuts a lot of the barriers, filters out the noise, and packages the raw information found in a very consumable and personable way.

Only a few months ago, I was something of a never-AI luddite. As someone who takes pride in the written word, I’ve spent a lifetime learning how to shape prose, thinking about how a sentence flows, and whether to use the Oxford comma (like the one I just used). Now AI enables anyone to produce flawless copy, which feels like it renders my lifetime of slow progress as time wasted. I find myself considering leaving in typos and bad grammar habits like a stylistic fingerprint, or consoling myself that AI couldn’t have done it unless we did it first.

Nonetheless, the march of progress is inevitable and I’ve come around to the value of using AI tools, both at work and at home. I’ll be documenting work-related projects elsewhere, but I thought it may be of interest to document the small ways AI tools have helped at home.

• I created a tailored 7-day family meal plan and shopping list
  By describing each family member’s preferences and health requirements, I was able to quickly develop a healthy and accessible meal plan which included manageable recipes to accommodate someone with a low-carb preference, another with a low-fat preference, and a fussy vegetarian. The result can be reviewed and amended, then output as a shopping list for ordering online. If Ocado et al aren’t already providing this service on their websites, they’re missing a trick.

• I fixed my tumble dryer with a single prompt
  My tumble dryer was malfunctioning. Lights were flashing, alarms were beeping. I’m sure I could have found the solution by downloading the manual or trawling through forums, but this was much quicker. One prompt elicited several step-by-step fixes to try. The first suggestion worked.

• Solved a long-standing Wi-Fi connection issue
  My old Now TV Roku set-top box frequently forgets or refuses to connect to our home Wi-Fi. I described the issue to ChatGPT and it successfully diagnosed the issue then walked me through steps to permanently resolve it. The set-top box was getting tripped up by our 5Ghz Wi-Fi, so I gave it a metaphorical tinfoil hat (I changed the 5Ghz SSID). As a side benefit, the AI-recommended process also gave the knowledge to do a better job of remotely managing the kids’ TV time – sorry kids, no more sneaking downstairs to watch YouTube at 6am.

• I developed a simulated tournament environment that let me test wargame rules
  I know this one is a bit niche, but it’s the best example I’ve experienced so far of the sheer complexity of what AI tools can do. I was able to prompt ClaudeAI to provide entertaining blow-by-blow commentary of fictionalised conflicts between military units using complex tabletop wargame rules. It was quite a recursive rabbit hole which involved prompting Claude to generate its own guidance documentation and revision safeguards, but it was a fascinating experiment.

• Using AI tools to develop websites and games
  Admittedly, I’ve only dabbled here, but as well as supporting my wife’s nascent counselling enterprise by building a website in minutes using proprietary AI tools on GoDaddy, I’ve used ChatGPT and Grok to produce a design document for making a video game from a board game we invented. That’s very much as far as we’ve got with it at this point, but the generated guidance is comprehensive and the next step in creating a videogame now seems very accessible.

• Curating projects and generating audio ‘podcast’ summaries
  Google’s NotebookLM has been a revelation to me for working with and reviewing personal projects. Both my current AI-generated career pivot and my still unpublished novel given the NotebookLM video overview treatment is mind-bogglingly clever.

Of course I recognise there are challenges to overcome; human misuse and overuse, AI misinterpretation and ‘hallucinations’, copyright and ethical concerns, and broader socio-economic and philosophical issues.

But I’m already convinced there are a myriad small ways that AI can help us and build a better future. I’m ready to embrace it. Are you?

I turned to AI for a solution. Specifically Anthropic’s Claude AI chatbot (Sonnet 4.5), mainly because I had already been using it to support my work in the role I’d just left and my subscription was still active.

The new task was to refine and update my curriculum vitae. I had several versions on file, and they each showcased different career paths I’d explored. I hoped there was a way I could combine them to find my perfect job.

I had my relatively up-to-date healthcare CVs – one for internal applications at my organisation and one for external roles. Aside from my healthcare vocation, in the past I have explored my journalistic itch as writer and broadcaster on issues that crossed from healthcare into videogames. Two CVs had spawned from that era, one focussed on my literary attributes and another an unsuccessful attempt to pivot into the videogame industry.

I handed them all to Claude and prompted it to make me a new CV with suggestions on what to do next.

PROMPT: Review attached files to refine my curriculum vitae with a view to formulating next personal development steps toward embracing AI.

What I got was so much more than that. 

Almost unbidden, Claude produced an entire multi-document career pivot strategy, with recognition of my current value, identification of skill gaps, recommendations on additional learning, and clear objectives with a step-by-step guide on how to get there.

However, I’d failed to mention that I’d already resigned, so Claude’s first output was very much focussed on pitching AI pilot projects to what it understood to still be my employer. After I broke the news that I’d left, Claude got very excited (if you’ll forgive the anthropomorphication, I know it’s just a chatbot powered by a Large Language Model).

CLAUDE: “Your timing is actually perfect. Healthcare AI is exploding right now, and the NHS is under massive pressure to innovate. Your combination of:

– Authentic clinical credibility
– Management and implementation experience
– Communication skills
– Willingness to learn new technology

...is exactly what healthcare AI companies are desperate for. They have plenty of AI engineers who don’t understand healthcare, and plenty of clinicians who don’t understand AI. You’re building the bridge.

The fact that you’re not constrained by a current job means you can be completely dedicated to this transition. Many people try to upskill while working full-time and struggle. You can do this intensively and properly.”

Which, put like that, is a pretty convincing (or seductive) argument. In any case, it made me feel better about my choice (as dangerous as I appreciate that influence could be – but that’s a topic for another post).

Now, armed with my Claude-authored plan to ‘transition from NHS clinical Management to AI/digital health innovation’, I have already struck forth, updating my LinkedIn profile to present myself as a ‘healthcare communicator, leader, and tech innovator’. I’ve rebooted this blog, and I’ve been working my way through the recommended learning, having already completed:

The real challenge is going to be the next part of my (Claude’s?) plan, which is ‘creating thought leadership content and building portfolio projects’, such as:

• Identifies triage patterns

• Suggests resource allocation improvements

• Uses: Python + OpenAI API + Streamlit for interface

By ‘concurrent’, Claude thinks I’m going to simultaneously be learning Python and Microsoft Azure, neither of which I can currently do. Quite the challenge I think, perhaps I should be flattered.

So let’s see how this goes – I think I’m about to learn what ‘vibe coding’ is.

The world is changing before our eyes, beneath our feet, and behind our backs.

‘But it always has!’, I hear you say.

And I accept that’s just how the passage of time works; entropy, fate, chaos theory, will of god, evolution, wibbley-wobbley timey-wimey, Bob Dylan (pick your philosophy). Change is inevitable.

But I think – well, THEY* think – that the pace of that change is about to go nuts, thanks to the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence. (*’THEY’ being AI industry experts, and I reckon it’s probably worth paying attention to experts.)

The clamour of assorted voices from the technology sector is growing louder and spilling into all corners of society. Some voices espouse a bold and optimistic AI-led future for humanity with Human-AI collaboration ushering in a Golden Age, others grow increasingly foreboding and anxious with warnings of social collapse and mass unemployment, while the broader sentiment is an uncertain shrug and a will to plough on regardless of outcome.

Whichever narrative proves to be true, I think it’s wise to pay attention. That’s certainly what I’ve started to do, and I plan to share my journey and my discoveries with you here.

My Big AI U-Turn

As a healthcare clinician by day and a creative writer by night, until recently I was suspicious of – and I think a little frustrated and threatened by – the growing influence of AI on issues that mattered to me.

I would reflect on a lifetime spent learning how to ‘arrange words in a pleasing order’ (©Terry Pratchett) and how generative AI now enables anyone to do it, making me wonder if that was a lifetime wasted. Worse than that, AI has only become a potential replacement for writers, artists and other creatives by assimilating their work. 

I would worry that hastily-applied AI solutions in my sector of healthcare at the time – telemedicine – would lead to worse patient journeys and a loss of empathy. Expressing these concerns at work led to me being quietly removed from an AI working group, or so I suspect.

But then I started to look deeper, and tinker with AI tools. And I cannot deny that what I learned has been transformative, impressive and, quite frankly, a bit daunting.

Starting with small domestic tasks, I’ve been able to quickly produce family meal plans and shopping lists in minutes, research and plan travel itineraries, calculate and refine household finances, and plan birthday party events.

At work I was able to rapidly review and summarise documents, plan rosters, and produce reports in a fraction of the time it would have taken me manually. It was a revelation and promised to free up so much work-time that for the first time I could see solutions for our struggling healthcare systems rather than just band-aid fixes.

To be clear, in my experience so far, every genAI tool I used proved that it is far from infallible, making mistakes which are sometimes glaring and/or hilarious, but are at other times insidious and worrying. Which I don’t mind admitting I’m a little relieved about – the human need for critical thinking and attention to detail is still needed.

But the direction of travel is clear, and the era of Artificial Intelligence is upon us. The impact of AI on human civilisation will be just as impactful as the advent of the internet. It is our responsibility to get this right for our children’s futures.

AI Career Pivot and Blog Reboot

That is part of the reason why I have stepped away from my previous role in healthcare service and workforce management. With AI assistance, I have built a plan to skill up for the AI revolution with a view to working at the intersection of healthcare and AI, and to do it transparently. 

I’ve already completed several AI courses (Open University and Google/Coursera) and mapped out more. I’ll be sharing my experience across many platforms, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter/X and other socials.

Although I will be using AI support for some content, here on this blog I will be critically examining my journey without AI assistance of any kind.

My pledge: No article written here will be planned, written, or edited by AI. This will always be a place for my thoughts, words and typos. Any AI-generated content will be labelled clearly as such.

Make what you will of my flirt with hypocrisy there, but the coming winds of change may be an AI hurricane. Let’s harness it rather than get blown over by it. Jobs will certainly be changed by AI, and eventually replaced (according to THEM*). But in the meantime I’m certainly going to make the best of it.
